Our hometown gospel powerhouse is one step from the crown. Here's how Pensacola is honoring her — and why May 16 is the party you can't miss.
Pensacola, Florida is having a moment. Keyla Richardson, the 29-year-old gospel-trained vocalist from right here in the City of Five Flags, has officially made the American Idol 2026 Top 3 — and the whole city is buzzing. From packed watch parties on Palafox Street to a full-blown civic celebration with a parade and key-to-the-city ceremony, Pensacola has made it crystal clear: we ride for our own.
And that spirit of hometown pride, community, and celebration? That's exactly what the Pensacola Pickles and Wings Family Festival is all about.
Keyla Richardson: Pensacola's American Idol Star
If you haven't been following along, here's the quick version: Keyla Richardson — Pensacola native, single mom, church praise leader, and music teacher — has been absolutely stunning the judges and the nation on American Idol Season 24. Judge Lionel Richie called one of her performances the greatest he'd ever seen on the Idol stage. Fellow judge Luke Bryan said she was simply letting what God gave her come out. And fans across the country have rallied behind the Keyhive — her devoted supporter base — to vote her through round after round.
She's now one of just three contestants standing between her and the American Idol crown, competing in the May 11 finale on ABC. Whatever happens in that finale, Pensacola has already won.
"224,000 auditions and you're one of the five best people in the country — that's an incredible feat." — Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves on Keyla Richardson
Pensacola Throws a Parade in Her Honor
Mayor D.C. Reeves didn't just tweet his congratulations — he organized KeylaFest 2026, a full city celebration on May 6 in downtown Pensacola. The event featured a parade down South Palafox Street, a key-to-the-city ceremony at Plaza de Luna, and a free homecoming concert at Hunter Amphitheater — with overflow viewing at Blue Wahoos Stadium. American Idol's own production crew showed up to film it for the May 11 finale broadcast.
Free tickets to the amphitheater concert — all 10,000 of them — were gone almost instantly. That tells you everything you need to know about how deeply Pensacola has embraced its hometown star. Even Florida State Representative Michelle Salzman gave a shout-out from the Florida House floor during a special session. This isn't just a TV story. This is a Pensacola moment.
